Businesses in The WIP

Since 1974, redevelopment efforts and public private partnerships have fostered the emergence of a modern industrial park in Wilmington. Evolving from a sea of junkyards, weed and rusting oil equipment, the Wilmington Industrial Park is demonstrating the vast economic potential of what may be the last available industrial and manufacturing property in the greater Los Angeles area.

The Wilmington Industrial Park is home to more than 75 businesses. Following are are just a few examples of businesses successful operating in the park:

California Cotton Fumigating Co., Inc.

California Cotton Funigating Company

222 East "G" St.
Wilmington, CA 90744
Telephone (310) 834-3535

California Cotton Fumigating Co., Inc. provides fumigating process service for both outbound and incoming cargo. A typical instance would be, after cotton bales are shipped out, cotton wastes and burlap bags are often returned to be transformed into felt, car mats, and carpet matting. Containerization made California Cotton's process easier, with its compact boxes of goods. When the boxes are made of wood, however, fumigation is essential prior to shipping because officials in some ports of entry fear the introduction of wood-boring insects in the containers. Other international consignees are equally cautious. California Cotton has the largest vacuum fumigation chambers on the West Coast. The company treats both delicate and perishable items i.e. fruits, flowers and holiday food staples, such as chestnuts from China.

California Cotton is a family owned business that Linda Jacobson inherited from her father, Tom Hackett who founded the company and operated with her husband, Tom Jacobson. California Cotton has been in business over 64 years and is now into its third generation of family ownership and operation. The company is a five-day-per-week, 8-hour per day operation for Tom Jacobson, and his son Tom Jr.; daughter-in-law Kristine; and 5 regular employees.

Metropolitan Stevedore Company (Metropolitan) has been located in Wilmington since 1923. Metropolitan developed an early reputation for offering clientele in the Los Angeles/Long Beach Harbor area the very latest in heavy-lift handling. Seventy years ago, a stevedore, someone who loads and unloads ships, was known as "the man with the hook" moving crates, boxes, and bales around the dock. Early cargoes, though extremely small by today's standards, consisted of familiar items: exotic fruits, seafood, ore and general goods.

Metropolitan is still known today as an innovator in cargo handling equipment in the ever-advancing maritime industry. As a full service general contractor and one of Southern California 's largest cargo-handling businesses, the company also operates various terminal facilities throughout the U.S. Through an Agreement with the Community Redevelopment Agency, in 1989, Metropolitan developed a handsome, modern 65,000 square foot office and headquarters building, which employs 45 people in the Wilmington Industrial Park. The building's quality design reflects Metropolitan's increased emphasis on a high technology-oriented expansion into the twenty-first-century. As a service organization, Metropolitan relies on its long history of professionalism to serve both large and small shippers and continues to emphasize efficiency, adaptation, innovation and a strong sense of community, in its quest to deliver quality, excellent service to its clients.
